“There Is No Sentiment in Politics” — Wike Defends Political Choices
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected criticisms of his political decisions, stating that politics is guided by interest, power, and popular support, not emotion.
Wike spoke on Sunday during a thank-you visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, his political base, where he met with supporters and political leaders.
He said his entry into politics was intentional and clear-cut, stressing that he chose a political career and would continue to act within that space without apology.
“I did not say I wanted to be a journalist or a public commentator. I said I wanted to be a politician, and that is exactly what I am,” Wike said.
The minister explained that the visit was meant to appreciate the people of Obio/Akpor for their support, noting that gratitude is a core responsibility of leadership.
“When people stand by you, you must acknowledge them. That is why I came back to say thank you,” he said.
Wike maintained that sentiment has no place in politics, arguing that interests determine outcomes. He also emphasized the political influence of Obio/Akpor, describing it as a decisive force in Rivers State elections.
“No one becomes governor in this state without Obio/Akpor. No one becomes senator for Rivers East without Obio/Akpor,” he said.
He warned political opponents against undermining the area while seeking its votes, adding that electoral power would be used to respond appropriately.
Addressing calls for his removal as FCT minister, Wike said such decisions rest solely with President Bola Tinubu.
“If my appointor feels I have nothing more to offer, that is his decision. Others have no authority to make that call,” he said, adding that the president understands his value.
Wike also praised Tinubu’s contributions to Rivers State, saying the people would reciprocate with support in the 2027 elections.
Earlier, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, said Obio/Akpor has over 684,000 registered voters out of Rivers State’s 3.5 million, making it a major political bloc.
“With this strength, nobody can question the political relevance of Obio/Akpor,” Chinda said, assuring Wike of continued support.
Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr Gift Worlu, described Wike as a major asset to the council, the state, and the country, citing his record in public service.
Worlu said supporting Tinubu in the 2023 election had brought tangible benefits to the area and assured that the people were aligned ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
On the governorship race, he said the council had not decided who to support but was clear on whom it would not back.
Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, also pledged continued support for Wike, saying lawmakers in the state would stand by him and support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“Tell Mr President that what we did in 2023, we will do even better in 2027,” Amaewhule said.
