“The Ugly Scenes Must Be Condemned and Never Repeated,” — FIFA President Infantino Blasts Senegal Team for AFCON Final Disruption
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sharply criticized Senegal’s players and staff for abandoning the pitch during Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final, calling their actions “unacceptable.”
The incident occurred deep into injury time of a 0-0 match against Morocco when a VAR-reviewed penalty was awarded to Morocco for a challenge on Brahim Diaz. Senegal players, already frustrated by a disallowed goal minutes earlier, walked off in protest. Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane remained on the field and urged his teammates to return.
The walk-off sparked further unrest in the stands, with some Senegalese fans attempting to enter the pitch and clashing with security. The match was delayed for nearly 20 minutes before Diaz’s penalty was taken—but saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Senegal eventually secured a 1-0 victory after Pape Gueye scored in extra time.
Infantino condemned both the players’ actions and the violent fan behavior. He emphasized that teams must respect referees’ decisions and compete within the Laws of the Game.
“Teams and players have a responsibility to act appropriately and set the right example for fans worldwide,” Infantino said. “Scenes like these have no place in football and must never be repeated. CAF’s disciplinary bodies must take appropriate action.”
Despite the controversy, Infantino praised Morocco for hosting the tournament and congratulated them as runners-up—a significant achievement ahead of their role as co-hosts of the 2030 World Cup.
