“The U.S. Will Take Over Gaza” – Trump Proposes American Control of the Strip
President Donald Trump announced that the United States would take control of the Gaza Strip, claiming it could be transformed into a thriving region under American oversight. Speaking from the Oval Office alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said the U.S. would “dismantle and develop” the war-torn territory, which has been devastated since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in October 2023.
Describing Gaza as a “hellhole,” Trump outlined his vision for a long-term American presence, turning the area into “the Riviera of the Middle East.” He said the U.S. would take responsibility for clearing unexploded ordnance, demolishing destroyed buildings, and launching economic development projects to create jobs and housing.
“We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings,” Trump said. “Create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area. Do a real job. Do something different.”
When asked who would live in Gaza under his plan, Trump simply responded: “The world’s people.” He also raised the possibility of sending U.S. troops to the region.
Netanyahu praised Trump’s remarks, calling them “history-changing” and urging further discussion on the idea. Neither leader addressed the legal implications of a U.S. takeover of the territory.
The comments came just hours before Trump signed an executive order withdrawing U.S. funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). He also stated that Palestinians have no alternative but to leave Gaza.
