Tension Rises: Nigerian Embassy Cautions Citizens in South Africa of Potential Attacks in the Event of Super Eagles’ Win
In anticipation of the highly anticipated semi-final clash between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued a security advisory to its citizens residing in the host country.
The advisory, dated February 6, 2024, titled “Advisory on safe conduct for Nigerians in South Africa before, during, and after 2024 AFCON match between Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana,” urges Nigerians to exercise caution in choosing where to watch the match and to be mindful of their conduct, especially in the event of a victory.
Highlighting potentially inflammatory online comments by some South African citizens, the High Commission expressed concern about veiled threats targeting Nigerians, including references to cooking jollof rice before the match and potential pepper-related actions if Bafana Bafana loses to the Super Eagles.
The advisory cautions Nigerians to be vigilant about their utterances, choose safe locations for watching the match, and refrain from engaging in loud or provocative celebrations in public spaces if the Super Eagles emerge victorious. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining good conduct, Nigerians are encouraged to report any provocations to the appropriate authorities rather than reciprocating.
In closing, the High Commission emphasizes the need for citizens to uphold law-abiding behavior before, during, and after the match, fostering a sense of security within the Nigerian community amidst heightened tensions surrounding this AFCON encounter.
