Tension in Abuja as Troops, Police Secure INEC Office Amid Fears of Protest by ADC Supporters
A heavy security presence was observed on Thursday at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, following concerns over a planned protest by supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigerian Army and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, were deployed around the premises. Armoured vehicles were stationed at strategic points, while access to parts of the facility was restricted.
The development comes amid a deepening leadership crisis within the ADC, which has split the party into rival factions.
The tension follows INEC’s decision to remove the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party. The commission said the move was in compliance with preservatory orders issued by the Court of Appeal, directing parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of a case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The dispute involves multiple claims to the party’s leadership, including that of Nafiu Bala Gombe, with different factions issuing conflicting directives to the electoral body.
INEC said it had received communications from opposing groups within the party—one warning against recognising Gombe as acting chairman, and another demanding full enforcement of the appellate court’s ruling.
In response to the situation, the commission announced it would suspend recognition of all factions within the ADC pending a final court decision. It also stated that it would not engage with any group or monitor activities such as meetings, congresses, or conventions organised in the party’s name.
The decision has drawn criticism from some party members, who allege bias and interference by the electoral body.
As of Thursday, security operatives maintained a strong presence at the INEC headquarters, with movement in and out of the complex closely monitored to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
