Tears, Chaos as Billboard Falls on Tricycles in Aba, Many Injured
A devastating incident unfolded on Wednesday in Aba, the commercial heartbeat of Abia State, when a large advertising billboard collapsed on several commercial tricycles along the busy Aba-Owerri Road, leaving multiple people injured and sparking public outcry over safety regulations.
The accident occurred at the Salad Market junction during a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds. The impact of the collapse also brought down high-tension electricity cables, plunging the area into darkness. Power supply is expected to remain disrupted until repairs are completed by Aba Power Limited Electric (APLE).
Although the total number of casualties remains unconfirmed at the time of reporting, eyewitnesses say several people, including tricycle operators and passengers, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. There are fears that some fatalities may have occurred.
The affected tricycles were part of the local commercial transport network operating along the Aba-Owerri Road. Victims included drivers waiting to load passengers and commuters who had already boarded.
Eyewitnesses, Mr. Chike and Mrs. Blessing, told SK Blog that the billboard was dislodged by the storm’s powerful winds. The structure, which had stood for years, reportedly collapsed due to a failure at its base.
By the time fire service officials arrived, most of the victims had already been evacuated by passersby and emergency responders. Structural engineers at the scene blamed the collapse on poor construction practices, including a weak foundation and the absence of soil testing. They criticized what they described as regulatory oversight failure at such a busy and strategic location.
A total of nine tricycles were reportedly crushed beneath the collapsed billboard.
Describing the event as a tragic eye-opener, Mrs. Blessing urged government agencies responsible for outdoor advertising to enforce stricter safety standards and conduct routine inspections of billboard structures across the city.
Our correspondent observed scenes of anguish at the site, as relatives and witnesses wept upon seeing the wreckage and the injured.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but public pressure is mounting for immediate investigation and enforcement of billboard safety regulations in Aba.
