Teacher Arrested for Beating 8-Year-Old Pupil into Coma in Anambra
In a shocking incident in Anambra State, Faith Nwonye, a teacher at Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North LGA, has been arrested for allegedly beating an eight-year-old pupil into a coma. The 30-year-old teacher reportedly assaulted the primary 2 pupil over the weekend.
Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the state commissioner for education, addressed journalists on Monday, revealing that both the school’s proprietor and Nwonye were summoned to explain the circumstances surrounding the severe beating. During the investigation, it was discovered that the school was operating illegally and has since been closed indefinitely.
The young pupil is currently receiving medical care, with doctors indicating only a 20 percent chance of survival. Chuma-Udeh emphasized the state’s commitment to pursuing justice, stating, “Whether the school is legal or not, it is criminal to beat a child.”
The incident has been reported to the police for further investigation, and Chuma-Udeh assured that Nwonye will face legal consequences. “We have handed the matter to the police for further investigations, as we await Mr Governor’s directives. The teacher will face other institutions against child rights and will experience the full wrath of the law,” she added.
Anambra State’s government has reiterated its stance against violence towards children and women. Attempts to contact Ikenganyia Anthony, the Anambra police spokesperson, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
