Suspected ‘One Chance’ Robbers Kill Nurse in Abuja
A nurse identified as Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem has been killed in Abuja by suspected members of a ‘one chance’ robbery syndicate.
The incident occurred on January 3, 2026, after Chinemerem closed from her afternoon shift and was returning home. She reportedly boarded a commercial vehicle, after which she was not seen again.
Her body was discovered by the roadside on the morning of January 4. She was later taken to the mortuary at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi.
Chinemerem was a staff member of FMC Abuja before her death. The incident has triggered concern and anger within the nursing community, with colleagues calling for a full investigation and justice for the victim.
The Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), FCT Council, Comrade Jama D. Medan, confirmed the killing in a statement issued on Monday, January 5.
In the statement titled *“Condemnation of the Brutal Killing of Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem of Federal Medical Centre, Abuja,”* the association described the killing as unjust and unacceptable.
According to Medan, Chinemerem had finished her afternoon duty on January 3 and boarded a vehicle on her way home but never arrived. Her body was later found dumped by the roadside.
He said the killing was not only a loss to the nursing profession but also a serious threat to healthcare workers who face growing security risks while commuting to and from work.
The association called on security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
NANNM also urged the FCT Minister to strengthen security around hospitals and major transport points, particularly during early morning and late-night hours. The group further appealed to the government to consider providing organised transportation for nurses to reduce exposure to criminal attacks.
The association extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the management of FMC Jabi, and nurses across the country, describing the loss as painful and irreversible.
It warned that failure to take decisive action would further endanger healthcare workers and weaken public confidence in security efforts within the capital.
