Suspect Arrested After Gunman Shoots Student Dead and Sexually Assaults Sister in Anambra
A gunman has been arrested in Anambra State after a tragic incident in the Unubi community of Nnewi South Local Government Area earlier this week. The suspect allegedly broke into the home of a teacher couple, Mr. and Mrs. Nwokedi, on Tuesday night, where he shot their 15-year-old son, Somtochukwu Nwokedi, before assaulting his sister.
The assailant, armed with a pump-action gun and wearing a mask, scaled the family’s fence and shot Somtochukwu at close range in the chest. Afterward, he attacked the boy’s sister before fleeing the scene. The gunman escaped through the same route he used to enter the compound.
Somtochukwu, a student at Monsignor Memorial Secondary School in Nnewi, had just returned home for the Easter holidays with his parents, both teachers in the community. He was described by family members as a bright and promising student. The tragic incident has left the family devastated and the entire community in shock.
The police were promptly notified, and the Councilor for Unubi Ward, Hon. Nduka Nchidem, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. In an interview, the elder brother of the deceased expressed deep sorrow, calling for justice while confirming that the authorities had been informed.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, identified as Chidiebere Mbene. He stated that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. SP Ikenga assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigation continues, emphasizing the police’s commitment to ensuring the perpetrator is held accountable.
