Supreme Court Verdict: Senate Leader Cautions Opposition Parties Against Manipulating Judiciary for Political Gain
In a recent statement, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has issued a stern warning to opposition parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), urging them to refrain from involving the judiciary in partisan politics by spreading disinformation, malinformation, and misinformation.
Bamidele, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters in the 9th National Assembly, voiced his concerns in Abuja on Friday. He criticized the opposition parties for attempting to manipulate the judiciary for their own political interests, which he believes go against the greater good of Nigeria and its citizens.
The Senate Leader commended the recent Supreme Court victory of President Bola Tinubu, but simultaneously condemned the unjustifiable attempts to influence the judiciary through media campaigns before the opposition parties’ petitions and candidates’ cases were decided.
Bamidele emphasized the importance of the judiciary as one of the most consistent, dependable, and impartial democratic institutions in Nigeria, standing up for the rights of the oppressed. He declared that it is both unethical and immoral for any political actor or party to subject the judiciary to a trial by media instead of respecting the principles of the law.
He pointed out that, historically, petitioners in Nigeria have benefited significantly from the judiciary’s independence and impartiality, and vilifying the judiciary is unwarranted given its crucial role in the nation’s democracy.
