Supreme Court Sets Date for Atiku’s Appeal Against Tinubu
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled October 23, 2023, as the date for the much-anticipated hearing of an appeal filed by Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the decision of the Presidential Election Petitions Court, which upheld the victory of Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A notice of the impending hearing was officially dispatched to legal counsel representing both parties, and this information was made public on Thursday by the Africa Independent Television (AIT).
Leading up to this pivotal court date, Atiku Abubakar’s legal team has submitted additional materials, most notably a recent deposition from the registrar of Chicago State University. These submissions aim to bolster Atiku’s claims that Bola Tinubu presented false academic credentials in his Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination form.
Conversely, Tinubu’s legal representatives have urged the Supreme Court to dismiss Atiku’s submissions, citing that the statutory window for evidence submission had already closed.
With the Supreme Court serving as the final arbiter in this high-stakes legal battle, the nation keenly awaits the outcome. The apex court has a deadline of November 6, 2023, to render a final verdict on Atiku’s appeal, a judgment that holds the potential to reshape the political landscape of Nigeria.
