Supporters of Peter Obi Call for Resignation of NDC South-West Chair Dayo Ekong, Give Reason

Supporters of Peter Obi have called for the resignation of Dayo Ekong, the south-west chairperson of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following allegations linked to her past role in the Labour Party (LP).

Ekong, who previously served as Lagos chairperson under the faction led by Julius Abure, left the LP on April 3 alongside Dudu Manuga, citing prolonged internal disputes and legal battles within the party. Days later, she joined the NDC and was appointed one of its national vice-chairpersons representing the geopolitical zones.

The controversy intensified after Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso formally joined the NDC on Sunday, alongside other opposition figures, including members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a post shared on X, Ekong welcomed the new entrants, stating: “We warmly welcome every Nigerian who has joined this transformative movement. Together, through the NDC, we are committed to rebuilding our nation and creating the Nigeria we all envision.”

She added, “This is our moment. We move forward with purpose, unity, and determination as we reclaim and redefine our country.”

However, her remarks triggered a wave of criticism online. Several users, identifying as Obi’s supporters, accused Ekong of undermining Obi’s position during their time in the LP.

One user wrote, “Her past actions are not opinions — they are documented facts. It was her public statements and manoeuvres that complicated Peter Obi’s position in the Labour Party.”

Another commenter said, “Are you the same woman that worked with Abure and sold our mandate? If yes, you should leave this party or step down from any leadership role.”

A third reaction read, “NDC should remove her from any position, otherwise we may see a repeat of 2023.”

Other critics questioned her continued leadership role in the NDC, arguing that her political history does not align with the expectations of party members seeking reform.

The NDC has not issued an official response to the calls for her resignation.
