Super Eagles Pocket $2.5 Million After Third-Place Finish at 2025 AFCON

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured $2.5 million (₦3.56 billion) after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations third-place play-off in Casablanca. Regulation time ended 0–0, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali became the standout performer, saving two penalties, including a decisive stop against Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, to seal Nigeria’s ninth AFCON third-place finish.

Senegal claimed their second AFCON title after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in extra time during a tense final in Rabat. Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the match’s only goal with a powerful strike into the top corner, handing Senegal the continental crown.

Prize money for the 2025 tournament saw a notable increase. CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed a record $10 million (₦14.23 billion) for the champions, up from $7 million in 2023. Morocco, as runners-up, received $4 million (₦5.69 billion), while Egypt, finishing fourth, earned $1.3 million (₦1.85 billion).

Quarter-finalists were awarded $800,000 (₦1.14 billion) each, third-placed teams in the group stage received $700,000 (₦996 million), and fourth-place group finishers took home $500,000 (₦711 million).

Motsepe emphasized that the increased payouts reflect CAF’s commitment to advancing African football. “It was less than $5 million before 2023, and we increased it to $7 million. Now, champions receive $10 million. We will continue to raise prize money for Africa’s premier competition,” he stated at a pre-tournament briefing at Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
