Students Fire Gunshots, Bring Armed Men During University Sign-Off Ceremonies – UNIZIK
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, has defended its recent ban on the popular “sign-off” ceremonies, citing safety concerns and repeated disruptions. The university’s spokesperson, Louis Njelita, stated that the decision became necessary after several incidents where students fired gunshots and brought armed men carrying AK-47 rifles onto campus during these events.
Sign-off ceremonies, traditionally held to celebrate the completion of final examinations, had increasingly spiraled out of control, the university noted. Students were reported to engage in long motorcades, speeding, blaring loud music, and creating general chaos, despite prior warnings from university authorities in April 2024. Njelita emphasized that these actions posed serious risks to the safety and well-being of the entire university community.
The ban has drawn mixed reactions, particularly following the arrest of three students by security personnel for allegedly violating the directive. However, the university administration maintains that the measure is necessary to protect both students and staff, and to prevent further escalation of violence.
UNIZIK officials also stressed that bringing armed individuals to campus constitutes a criminal offense, carrying legal consequences, and reiterated their commitment to maintaining order and discipline. The university encouraged students to explore alternative ways to celebrate their academic achievements safely, in compliance with campus regulations.
