Anambra State’s Ogbaru local government area witnessed a major breakthrough in security operations as a forty-man strike force reportedly raided the strongholds of unidentified gunmen, leaving eight suspects wounded in the confrontation. These unknown gunmen had held around thirteen out of sixteen communities in the area hostage until the recent intervention.
The strike force’s decisive action, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy stationed in the area, targeted three camps where the gunmen operated. The operation resulted in the recovery of arms, ammunition, charms, and even military and police uniforms, marking a significant dent in the activities of the gunmen. Although the exact count of casualties remains uncertain, it is believed that some gunmen sustained injuries, while others attempted to flee, possibly into the River Niger, leading to unconfirmed reports of a few drowning.
Hon. Paschal Aniegbunam, Chairman of the Ogbaru local government area, expressed relief at the restoration of peace and security in the region. He highlighted the challenges previously faced by workers, farmers, traders, and fishermen due to the disruptive activities of these unidentified assailants. The formation of the forty-man security strike force in tandem with the Navy has resulted in the freedom of Ogbaru from the gunmen’s hold.
Aniegbunam also commended Governor Charles Soludo for his support in combating the security challenges. Soludo’s initiatives have not only restored calm but have facilitated the return of contractors to ongoing projects. Five road constructions, including flood-resistant ones such as Atani – Ozubulu road, Edeh, Izzi, school road, Ojoto road, Ossamala road to Port Harcourt in Rivers State, and Onitsha – Ossamala road shoulders, have resumed, offering a promising solution to the perennial flooding issues in the area.
The efforts to enhance security and infrastructure development in Ogbaru signify a significant step towards the overall betterment of the region, potentially paving the way for sustained progress and economic growth.
