‘Story that Microsoft is Shutting Down Nigeria Office is not True,’ Says Presidential Aide

Temitope Ajayi, the senior special assistant to President Bola Tinubu on media and publicity, has refuted recent claims suggesting that Microsoft is closing its operations in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on X, Ajayi addressed the speculation, affirming that Microsoft is merely restructuring its roles, which may affect some positions.

Earlier reports on May 8 had indicated layoffs at the Africa Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, purportedly initiated by Microsoft.

While confirming the reduction in staff, an employee speaking to The Cable admitted uncertainty regarding the rationale behind the decision.

Ajayi clarified that the number of affected employees is less than 30 and emphasized that Microsoft’s Nigeria office remains operational.

He clarified, “The Africa Development Centre is just one facet of Microsoft’s business in Nigeria. Contrary to misleading reports and @PeterObi’s assertions, the ADC is not facing closure.”

Furthermore, Ajayi outlined Microsoft’s approach to the reorganization, stating that impacted employees will be encouraged to apply for alternative positions within the company, a standard procedure.

However, those unable to secure new roles internally or seeking opportunities elsewhere will be supported in transitioning out of the organization.

Ajayi criticized Peter Obi’s remarks as exaggerated, emphasizing that the situation at Microsoft does not warrant the alarm conveyed by the ‘earthquake’ analogy.

Earlier, on May 8, Peter Obi expressed concern over the reported closure of Microsoft’s innovation center and the termination of 200 jobs, highlighting the setback it represents for Nigeria’s tech and innovation ambitions in Africa.
