Stop Work Any Month Salary Is Delayed Beyond Third Day, ASUU Orders Members

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a directive to all its members nationwide to stop work in any month their salaries are not paid by the third day. Lecturers are to remain off duty until full payment is received, the union stated.

ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, made this known during an interview with the *Nigerian Tribune* on Monday night. He explained that the decision was in response to the persistent delays in salary payments following the union’s migration from the government’s controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

Professor Piwuna accused the Federal Government of deliberately frustrating the new payment platform and punishing university lecturers for rejecting IPPIS. He noted that other government workers still on IPPIS continue to receive their salaries promptly, while university staff under GIFMIS are consistently paid late.

“We strongly believe this is a form of punishment for stepping away from IPPIS,” he said. “There’s no other explanation when others are being paid on time and we are not. The government hasn’t even provided any justification for the delay.”

Citing the harsh economic climate, Piwuna stressed that lecturers can no longer afford to work without timely compensation. He stated that ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) has resolved to enforce the “no pay, no work” stance and has informed all branches of the decision.

He also reiterated ASUU’s call for the Federal Government to urgently conclude negotiations on the long-standing 2009 Agreement, saying that clarity and commitment are needed to ensure stability in the university system.
