Stop Calling Us Tinubu’s Rubber Stamp, Senate Warns Nigerians

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has urged Nigerians to stop referring to the 10th National Assembly as a “rubber-stamp parliament,” saying the label is unjustified. Speaking in a statement released on Sunday, the Senator representing Ekiti Central pushed back against criticisms that the National Assembly simply approves Executive Bills without proper scrutiny.

The accusation gained traction as some Nigerians expressed frustration over the rapid passage of certain bills and presidential requests requiring legislative approval. Critics have dismissed the National Assembly as merely an extension of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. However, Senator Bamidele denied this characterization, emphasizing the thorough legislative process behind major bills.

He highlighted the extensive consultations and debates that preceded the passage of the controversial Tax Reform Bills, 2024, noting that over 39 engagements took place between both the executive and legislative branches. These sessions included input from civil society organizations, professional bodies, religious leaders, and industry leaders. The process spanned six months, far longer than a quick, unchecked approval would take, demonstrating the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive and careful lawmaking.

Senator Bamidele also referenced the 2025 Appropriation Act, which was laid before the joint session on December 18, 2024, and passed on February 13, 2025. He said the extended scrutiny period reflected due diligence and proper committee oversight, rather than mere compliance with executive wishes. The National Assembly’s methodical review, including engaging agency heads, aimed to ensure the budget aligned with public interest and good governance.

The Senate Leader stressed that the National Assembly is committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible governance through its legislative activities. He urged Nigerians to recognize the complexities involved in lawmaking and to avoid simplistic labels that undermine the institution’s efforts.
