Speeding SUV Driver Kills Okada Rider, Two Passengers in Edo
A fatal accident on Monday night near the Ogba River bridge in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State claimed the lives of a commercial motorcyclist, popularly known as an Okada rider, and his two passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred when the driver of a speeding SUV lost control and rammed into the motorcycle, instantly killing the victims. “The driver of the vehicle lost control and ran over the Okada rider and his passenger. He was at top speed, and it became very difficult for him to control the vehicle when it began to swerve,” a witness recounted.
Following the crash, fellow motorcyclists staged a protest along Airport Road, decrying what they described as frequent road accidents in the area. Some protesters alleged that the driver was involved in internet fraud, locally referred to as Yahoo Yahoo. One of them, Abdullahi Usman, said the deceased Okada rider was the secretary of their union. “These Yahoo Yahoo boys do not care about another person on the road. The accident was very severe. It was the Divisional Police Officer at the Estate Police Station who calmed frayed nerves. We are calling on the police to do a thorough investigation and bring the culprit to book,” he said.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, noting that investigations were ongoing. “I can confirm to you that the accident and the Okada rider and his passenger were killed. However, an investigation is ongoing to bring anyone who is liable to justice,” he stated.
