Speaker Bows to Public Pressure, Pulls Controversial Subversion Bill from House Agenda

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has announced the withdrawal of the highly controversial Counter Subversion Bill and related legislation. This decision, made public on Wednesday through a statement by Musa Krishi, the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, follows significant public outcry and consultations with various stakeholders.

The Counter Subversion Bill, introduced on July 23, 2024, had ignited considerable debate over its potential infringement on civil liberties. The proposed legislation aimed to impose severe penalties on individuals for not reciting the newly approved national anthem or for insulting politicians and community leaders. Convictions under the bill could lead to fines of up to N5 million and prison sentences ranging from five to ten years.

In his statement, Krishi emphasized that the decision to withdraw the bill underscores Speaker Tajudeen’s dedication to aligning the House of Representatives with the will of the people. “The Speaker’s choice to retract the bill reflects his commitment to ensuring that the House remains a true representation of public sentiment and to uphold peace and unity within the nation,” Krishi said.

The bill had generated significant attention after it advanced to the second reading, where its general principles were to be debated. The Speaker’s action reaffirms his stance on prioritizing the interests and concerns of citizens and ensuring that legislative actions do not threaten national harmony.
