Spanish Catholic Church Temporarily Suspends Priest Amid Drug Trafficking Allegations
A Catholic priest in Don Benito, a town in the western Extremadura region of Spain, has been temporarily suspended by the Roman Catholic Church following accusations of involvement in drug trafficking, including the sale of erectile dysfunction medication Viagra.
The diocese of Plasencia, responsible for the priest’s parish, revealed that the clergyman was apprehended on Monday on suspicion of “trafficking narcotic substances.” The priest, whose identity remains undisclosed, was provisionally released by the investigating judge, prompting the diocese to express its “pain and dismay at the suffering and scandal” caused by the unfolding events.
Pending a “clarification” of the situation, the diocese has decided to temporarily remove the priest from the public exercise of the ministry and from his position as parish priest. The statement indicates that the clergyman has been offered “psychological and spiritual accompaniment” during this challenging period.
Spanish media reports suggest that the priest, allegedly involved in the trafficking of Viagra, aphrodisiacs, and narcotics, was arrested alongside a second individual described as his lover. The two men, who had been under police surveillance for several months, reportedly utilized a residence rented by the priest to store the illicit products. The news has generated a sense of “disbelief” among the parish’s faithful, according to online newspaper El Espanol.
