2024 Olympics: Spain’s Late Free Kick Sinks Nigeria’s Falcons in Group C Clash
The Super Falcons of Nigeria faced a tough setback in their quest for Olympic glory, losing 1-0 to Spain in their Group C match on Sunday evening.
This clash marked the second game for both teams in the ongoing Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football tournament in France.
Spain’s Alexia Putellas clinched the win for La Roja with a stunning 85th-minute direct free kick, leaving Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Nnadozie, unable to react in time.
With this victory, Spain secured their place in the quarterfinals of the tournament, with a final group match against Brazil scheduled for Wednesday.
The Falcons created several opportunities but were unable to capitalize, most notably when team captain Rasheedat Ajibade missed a crucial one-on-one chance.
Tonight’s defeat leaves Nigeria at the bottom of the table with zero points, following their previous 1-0 loss to Brazil.
The Falcons’ next match against Japan on Sunday will be pivotal, but their chances of advancing to the next round remain slim.
