Spain Joins South Africa’s Genocide Case Against Israel at ICJ
Spain has officially announced its decision to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The case addresses the ongoing Israeli aggression in the besieged Palestinian Gaza Strip.
During a press conference held yesterday, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares emphasized that Spain’s participation aims to restore peace in Gaza and the broader Middle East region. “A large-scale war that does not distinguish between civil and military objectives is taking place, and the risk of escalation is increasing,” Albares stated.
South Africa initially submitted the case in late December 2023, accusing Israel of committing acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip in violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
On January 26, the ICJ ordered Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent genocide and ensure that its military does not commit such acts. The court also called on Israel to halt incitement against Palestinians and take immediate steps to facilitate humanitarian aid.
