Sowore Urges U.S. Attorney-General to Probe Wike Over Illegal Florida Property Purchase, Money Laundering
Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called on the Attorney-General of Florida to investigate Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over an alleged illegal acquisition of property in the United States.
Sowore alleged that Wike purchased a multimillion-dollar mansion in Florida using cash but falsely claimed the property was acquired by his in-laws on behalf of his wife and children. He described the transaction as a case of money laundering and concealment of ownership, particularly because Wike’s wife is a sitting Justice of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal.
According to Sowore, the alleged deal falls under Florida Statute §812.019, which criminalises organising or directing trafficking in stolen property — an offence punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
“Florida law prohibits anyone who has stolen or laundered money from using it to purchase property,” Sowore stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Wike bought the mansion in cash while claiming his in-laws purchased it for his wife and children. He is about to find out the hard way.”
The activist urged Florida’s Attorney-General to take immediate action, arguing that the alleged crime mirrors Wike’s controversial land acquisitions in Abuja. He accused the minister of extending corrupt practices beyond Nigeria’s borders and warned that U.S. law enforcement would not allow such actions to go unpunished.
Sowore also referenced a recent U.S. court ruling dismissing former President Donald Trump’s $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, saying it demonstrates the strength of the American judicial system compared to Nigeria, where political elites often manipulate court processes.
