Southeast And Southwest: Time to Bury The Civil War Animosity and Embrace By Obinna Aligekwe
On the background animosity between the South East and South West, I have this to say;
The ultimate skill of any heterogenous entity, is the ability to forgo differences when facing a common adversary, even if they have to address those differences at a later date.
That the Yoruba took sides in a civil war that saw to the annihilation of two million Igbos, cannot erase the fundamental difference we have with the core North.
60 years after independence, and 50 years after the civil war, we have tried to forge a nation with the core North to no avail, and with no indication that they are ready to treat all Nigerians as equals.
There is nobody who has not borne the brunt of Fulani hegemony.
Sadly, no matter what you feel about what role anybody played, true or false, there is no option outside Southern unity, and the only two groups that can forge this are the Igbos and Yoruba, which will see to a subsequent combination with the other Southern groups.
Even the Middle Belt, which is beginning to see the farce of a “monolithic” north, is a bride ready to be picked.
My dear Igbo brothers, you see, that continous notion of castigating your south west brothers for the role they played, should stop.
Some of us should develop emotional skills at courting allies.
You cannot curse others into cooperating with you, even when history is on your side.
You allow history to do the talking, and hope their change of mind produces a rapproachment.
I have said it on more than one occassion that I have not been a fan of Nnamdi Kanu, but did you see his stance on Sunday Igboho?
That is tact.
You cannot continue to guilt-trip potential allies into joining your cause.
Because, let’s face it, no race is perfect, even yours.
Sometimes societies, due to limitations in foreseeing their trajectory, find themselves on the wrong side of history, but the greatest skill is the ability to self correct back to the right path.
The Germans you see today, their ancestors nearly destroyed Europe in two world wars, but they owned their shame and redeemed themselves before the whole world.
Their most unfortunate victims, the Jews, are their allies today.
We should learn emotional intelligence and detect where the tide is turning.
The yorubas are more likely to serve your purpose today than anybody else, as it is already evident that no one can go it alone.
You need opting out of Nigeria more than anybody else?
Then prove it.
Stop acting like you cannot overcome the past to conquer your future.
