South-East Ex-Governors Back Tinubu, Launch Regional Forum Ahead of 2027

Former governors from Nigeria’s South-East have declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general election.

The endorsement was announced on Tuesday following the inauguration of the Forum of South-East Former Governors, a new platform created to advise and support incumbent governors in the region on key political and developmental issues.

The group linked its position to ongoing infrastructure projects under the current administration, describing federal interventions in the South-East as significant to the region’s development.

A communiqué issued after the meeting and read by David Umahi said the forum is non-partisan and open to all former governors from the region, regardless of political affiliation.

According to the statement, some former governors were absent due to health and other commitments, but the group expects broader participation in future meetings.

The forum commended serving South-East governors for progress in infrastructure, security, and social empowerment programmes. It also acknowledged federal support to states, noting that such backing has contributed to the outcomes recorded across the region.

Members further praised Tinubu’s administration for appointing individuals from the South-East into key government positions.

On the 2027 election, the group said governors in the region are aligned in their support for the president’s re-election bid, describing the stance as strategic.

As part of its next steps, the forum plans to engage directly with current governors through a courtesy visit aimed at outlining its objectives and identifying areas for collaboration.

The body also said it would promote awareness of government initiatives and continue to support development efforts across the South-East.

Among those present at the inaugural meeting were Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Chris Ngige, Sullivan Chime, Okezie Ikpeazu, Martin Elechi, and Umahi.
