South African Footballer Shot Dead in Car Hijacking Incident

Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs, aged 24, was fatally shot during a car hijacking at a petrol station in Roodepoort, Johannesburg. According to BBC reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday night when two armed suspects approached Fleurs and demanded he exit his vehicle before shooting him. Despite efforts to save him, Fleurs was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Fleurs, originally from Cape Town and a product of the Ubuntu Football Academy, had previously played for SuperSport United. He joined Kaizer Chiefs on a free transfer after leaving SuperSport at the end of the previous season but had not yet made his debut for the team.

In a statement, Kaizer Chiefs expressed profound sadness at Fleurs’ untimely death, extending their condolences to his family and friends. The South African Police Service is currently investigating the incident, with no arrests made at the time of reporting.

Described as a “classy defender” with “great technical abilities” on the Kaizer Chiefs website, Fleurs’ promising career has been cut short by this senseless act of violence.
