Soludo Reacts to Report Alleging Plans to Arrest Catholic Bishops, Priests

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has dismissed reports alleging that he plans to arrest and jail Catholic bishops and priests after his re-election as false and baseless. The statement, issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, described the claims as deliberate misinformation aimed at creating tension and undermining the peaceful atmosphere in the state ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

According to Mefor, the report circulating in some media outlets is a “clear case of fake news” fabricated by opposition elements “who have run out of campaign material.” He stated that Governor Soludo, a staunch Catholic, maintains cordial relations with the Church and its leaders, emphasizing that the governor holds deep respect for all religious institutions and remains committed to peace and mutual understanding.

“The government of Anambra State wishes to make it categorically clear that there is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Soludo plans to arrest or jail Catholic bishops and priests after his re-election,” the commissioner said. “Ndi Anambra should disregard this falsehood and always demand verifiable evidence before believing or sharing such stories.”

Mefor also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to upholding the rights and freedoms of all citizens, including religious leaders. He warned against the spread of misinformation capable of inciting unrest and urged residents to rely only on verified sources of information.

He further highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts under the Oso Soludo initiative to rid Anambra of fake spiritual practitioners, including false native doctors and fraudulent clergymen, while collaborating with the Federal Government to prosecute individuals involved in certificate forgery and other fraudulent activities.

The Information Commissioner reiterated that Governor Soludo remains focused on promoting peace, transparency, and good governance across the state.
