Outrage as Iranian Hijab Enforcer’s Daughter Marries in Strapless Dress, Sparks Hypocrisy Debate
A video showing the daughter of one of Iran’s top hardliners getting married in a strapless wedding gown has set off a storm of outrage, with many accusing the country’s leaders of hypocrisy and double standards.
Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a senior aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a former secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council, is seen in the viral footage proudly walking his daughter, Fatemeh Setayesh, down the aisle. The bride appears in a white, strapless gown that reveals her shoulders and cleavage, with her hair uncovered — a direct violation of the strict dress codes her father once helped enforce.
The wedding reportedly took place last year at the luxurious Espinas Palace Hotel in Tehran, but the footage only began circulating online on October 18, 2025, after being leaked. The video also shows Shamkhani’s wife in a revealing blue lace gown with her back and sides exposed, while other female guests appear without hijabs.
Shamkhani, 70, is known for leading a severe crackdown on Iranian women who refused to wear the hijab, often defending harsh punishments for defaulters in the name of Islamic morality. The contrast between his public stance and his family’s private behavior has infuriated citizens already frustrated by the regime’s rigid social controls.
Social media users and critics have flooded Iranian platforms with comments condemning what they describe as the ruling elite’s hypocrisy — leaders enforcing conservative laws on ordinary people while enjoying personal freedoms denied to the masses.
The incident adds to growing public anger over Iran’s double standards on morality, with many calling for an end to the oppressive hijab laws that continue to spark protests and resistance, especially among young women.
The viral wedding video has now become a symbol of deepening distrust in Iran’s leadership, highlighting how the rules appear to apply only to the poor and powerless, not to those in power.
