Sokoto: Jealous wife allegedly burns husband’s private part with hot water over suspicion of talking to another woman
A housewife in Sokoto has allegedly poured a hot substance on her husband after accusing him of infidelity, leaving him with severe burns.
The victim, Bello Abubakar, said the incident happened at their home in the Yar Gabas area of Sokoto metropolis shortly after he returned from morning prayers.
According to Abubakar, he had gone to the mosque for Subhi prayer and later returned home, where he met his wife in tears. He said she did not explain the cause of her distress when he asked.
He stated that he later prepared to leave home for work after performing ablution and reading the Qur’an. At that point, his wife reportedly asked him to wait. He said he was lying down when she entered the room carrying a cup containing a heated substance.
Abubakar explained that he assumed it was harmless, as his wife sometimes used a similar container for prayer-related rituals during episodes he described as periods of illness. He said he was suddenly struck by intense pain after the liquid was poured on him.
He sustained burns and was taken to a specialist hospital in Sokoto, where he is receiving treatment and is said to be recovering.
A family member, Tasiu Abubakar, said the couple had previously lived without conflict, but suggested that the woman’s mother had opposed the marriage and may have influenced her actions. He added that both families have agreed to settle the matter privately rather than pursue legal proceedings.
Attempts to reach the wife or her relatives were unsuccessful.
Police spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufai said the command would look into the incident and provide updates, but had not released further details at the time of filing this report.
