‘Small Lighter’, Two Others Killed as Rival Cult Groups Clash in Rivers State
A violent clash between rival cult groups in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has left three people dead and led to the arrest of three suspects.
The confrontation, which began on Friday when one group attacked the other, resulted in two fatalities. A reprisal attack followed on Saturday, escalating the violence.
Among those killed was a notorious cultist known as ‘Small Lighter,’ who had allegedly been terrorizing the area. His death reportedly came as retaliation after he was accused of killing a member of the rival group. Sporadic gunfire during the clashes caused panic, forcing some residents to flee.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that security forces had been deployed to restore order. “Yes, I can confirm the cult clash. Three persons were killed, and three suspects have been arrested,” she said. “Our men have been deployed to the area, and calm has been restored. Investigation is ongoing to track down other fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.”
Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Brain Gokpa, assured residents that security operatives were in control of the situation. He urged youths in the community to remain calm and avoid further violence. “Security agencies have been deployed to Onne, and everything is under control,” he said. “There is no need for panic. I advise Onne youths not to take the law into their own hands, as security forces are handling the situation.”
Authorities have vowed to intensify efforts to curb cult-related violence in the area and bring those responsible to justice.
