Six Killed in Anambra Crash as Another Eight Die on Oyo Highway

A fatal crash on the Awka–Onitsha expressway late Friday claimed six lives after a bus collided with a tipper near the Nawfia axis close to Enugu-Agidi Junction. Anambra FRSC Sector Commander Bridget Asekhauno told reporters in Awka that the vehicles—a yellow and black tipper (FGG21XV) and a red bus (XQ398AA)—were involved in a head-on collision caused by reckless driving.

According to her, an eyewitness said the bus was returning from a Catholic Women Organisation burial in Ebonyi and the driver attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre in an effort to make up time. Of the 32 passengers on board, six people—two men and four women—lost their lives, while five women sustained injuries. Twenty-one others escaped without harm.

All victims were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths. FRSC officers cleared the scene soon after, allowing traffic to return to normal. Asekhauno described the collision as avoidable and urged motorists to observe traffic rules and refrain from aggressive driving.

In a separate incident on Tuesday night, eight people died in a crash along the Oyo/Ogbomoso highway. FRSC Sector Commander Mary Alo said 19 people were involved, with four survivors currently receiving treatment at the State Hospital in Oyo town. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the hospital morgue.
