Six Dead, 60 Injured in Fatal Accident in Lokoja
A tragic road accident in Lokoja, Kogi State, has left six people dead and 60 others injured. The incident occurred at around 3 pm on Tuesday, near the Zone 8 Roundabout along Hassan Katsina Road, Lokoja. According to Samuel Oyedeji, the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), an articulated truck traveling from Bauchi to Enugu State lost control, leading to the fatal crash. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene as chaotic, with first responders working for hours to manage the aftermath. “It was a horrific sight. People were trapped and it took hours to clear the scene,” the resident shared.
Oyedeji called for greater caution from drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles. He also emphasized the need for the government to address road infrastructure issues and strengthen the enforcement of traffic regulations. “As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, Nigerians are once again reminded of the shared responsibility to ensure safer roads for all,” he said.
This tragic event comes on the heels of another deadly accident in the state, where 13 people died and two others were injured in April 2024. That incident, which involved a commercial Sharon bus and an articulated cement truck, occurred at Obajana Market along the Obajana-Lokoja Road when the cement truck lost its brake and crashed into the stationary bus.
