Shehu Sani Endorses Proposal for FRSC Personnel to Carry Firearms
Former Senator Shehu Sani has thrown his support behind the controversial call for Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel to be armed, suggesting that only those stationed on federal highways outside urban areas should receive firearm training.
The Federal Road Safety Corps has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of arming its personnel to enhance their ability to tackle rising security challenges across the country. Corps Marshal Dauda Biu, speaking during the inauguration of 1,762 corps personnel who recently completed a four-month introductory course at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) in Kontagora, Niger, advocated for this measure. He was represented at the event by Deputy Corps Marshal Shehu Zaki.
Biu argued that arming FRSC personnel would offer them essential protection against frequent attacks during their duties, often perpetrated by aggressive road users or suspected criminals exploiting the country’s security challenges.
Former Senator Shehu Sani weighed in on the matter, expressing his support for the proposal. He stated, “I support that Federal Road Safety Corps should bear arms.” Sani added a caveat to his endorsement, specifying, “But only for those working on the federal highways outside the cities.”
Sani’s endorsement adds another voice to the ongoing debate surrounding whether arming FRSC personnel is a necessary measure to enhance their safety and effectiveness in managing road safety and security issues. The discussion continues as stakeholders and policymakers consider the implications of such a significant policy change.
