Senate Unanimously Approves New Federal University in Ekiti to Boost Technological, Environmental Sciences
The Nigerian Senate has given its resounding approval for the establishment of a Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin-Ekiti Kingdom, Ekiti State. The aim of this institution is to nurture world-class technologists and professionals capable of effectively managing the nation’s economy, thereby fostering sustainable growth.
The Senate’s endorsement followed extensive deliberations and unanimous ratification of the bill seeking to create this pioneering tertiary institution during a plenary session held on Thursday. Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jubrin, who presided over the session, subsequently referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for further legislative processes and considerations.
The bill, which was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, received overwhelming support from senators representing various political affiliations. Originally introduced during the ninth National Assembly, it was reintroduced for consideration with a specific focus on bridging knowledge gaps in technology and environmental sciences.
Senator Bamidele emphasized the significance of this legislation, stating that its enactment into law would pave the way for the development of top-tier technologists and human resources crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He further stressed that the university’s primary objectives are to expand access to higher education, establish a cutting-edge institution, and advance knowledge through research.
Senator Bamidele articulated, “The university, when established, will further advance knowledge through research and nurture unique technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and wealth management in its core area of interest. The enactment of this bill will help in transforming the technological and educational fortune, producing the desired manpower and expertise that Nigeria is yearning for to exponentially speed up our economic growth and ensure sustainable development.”
This initiative also garnered support from other prominent senators, including Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jubrin; Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmed Lawan; Chairman, Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel; Chairman, Senate Committee on the Environment, Senator Seriake Dickson; Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs, Senator Abdul Ningi, and Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Senator Victor Umeh.
Senator Lawan voiced his endorsement, emphasizing the importance of technology and environmental sciences in the 21st century. He stressed the need to move away from traditional, outdated courses and embrace knowledge-based economies for the nation’s development.
Senator Umeh echoed these sentiments, highlighting the university’s focus on technology and environmental sciences as vital for producing graduates with exceptional knowledge.
The establishment of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences is poised to elevate Nigeria’s position in the global technological and environmental landscape, addressing knowledge gaps and fostering sustainable development for the nation.
