Senate Receives Bill for Creation of ‘Tiga State’ from Kano

On Wednesday, Kano South Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman presented a bill to the Senate proposing the creation of ‘Tiga State’ from Kano State. This bill, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523),” underwent its First Reading on July 10, 2024.

This initiative follows recent legislative efforts for state creation, including a bill by Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko for the creation of Anioma State in the South-East to equalize the number of states across geo-political zones. Other proposed state creations include Orlu State, sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso and House Representative Ikenga Ugochineyere, and Etiti State, supported by Amobi Godwin Ogah and four other lawmakers representing affected communities.

The push for new states extends beyond these proposals, with several legislators advocating for the division of Lagos and other states across Nigeria.
