Senate Agrees to Extend Retirement Age for National Assembly Staff

The Senate has reversed its decision and consented to the extension of the retirement age for civil servants employed within the National Assembly.

This decision follows last week’s dismissal of a related bill by the upper legislative chamber, marking a significant change in stance. On Thursday, the Senate aligned with the House of Representatives on the matter.

The bill, successfully passed by the House, aims to raise the retirement age to 65 years or 40 years of service, whichever occurs first. The current legislation mandates retirement at 60 years of age or after 35 years of service.

Notably, last week saw some senators opposing the bill, arguing against granting special privileges to National Assembly staff. Enyinnaya Abaribe, the senator representing Abia South, voiced concerns about the perceived lack of distinction between civil servants in the National Assembly and those in federal ministries.

Abaribe questioned the differentiation between roles, stating, “I do not see what separates the person who works inside here as a staff of the National Assembly from the person who works in the Ministry of Commerce as a staff.”

Despite initial resistance, the Senate has formed a committee to reconcile its bill with that of the House of Representatives, suggesting a potential resolution to the retirement age debate for National Assembly staff.
