The call follows a motion presented by Senator Abba Moro, highlighting the pressing need to safeguard democracy amid the dissolution of elected councils in Benue State. Lawmakers argued that the substitution of Elected Councils with Caretaker Committees is not only undemocratic but also a violation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Senatorial district, seconded the motion, expressing concern over the prolonged undermining of Nigeria’s local government system.

Senators urged Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to uphold his oath of office, abide by the rule of law, review the constitution of caretaker committees, and reinstate the elected councils.

As the Senate proceeds with the debate on the merits and general principles of the 2024 appropriation bill, the focus on preserving democratic norms remains a pivotal point in the ongoing legislative discussions.
