Senate Accuses Governors of ‘Killing’ Local Governments: Calls for Urgent Action
In a damning revelation, the Senate has accused state governors in Nigeria of embezzling funds allocated to local government councils, effectively rendering the grassroots governance system defunct. This assertion comes amidst growing concerns over the erosion of local autonomy and the mismanagement of resources meant for community development.
Senator Suleiman Kawu, representing Kano South under the NNPP, spearheaded the motion in the Senate, highlighting the dire state of local governance in the country. Kawu emphasized that the local government system, envisioned as a vehicle for grassroots development, has fallen prey to neglect and abuse by successive administrations.
The Senate’s resolution, propelled by Kawu’s motion, calls for immediate action to address the crisis. President Bola Tinubu is urged to lead the charge for full autonomy for local governments, echoing his past efforts during his tenure as governor of Lagos State.
The motion underscores the historical significance of local governments in Nigeria’s governance framework, tracing back to the decentralization efforts of 1976. However, despite initial promises of empowerment and self-governance, local governments have faced systemic challenges, including financial constraints and political interference.
Former governors turned senators, such as Orji Uzor Kalu and Godswill Akpabio, weighed in on the debate, lamenting the decline of local governance and advocating for the restoration of funds and capacity-building initiatives at the grassroots level.
Senator Ahmad Lawan emphasized the need for constitutional guarantees to ensure the effectiveness of local governments, stressing the importance of devolving powers to empower local authorities.
The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, presiding over the session, delivered a scathing indictment of governors, accusing them of siphoning funds meant for local development projects. Barau highlighted the coercive tactics employed by some governors to control local government finances, thereby stifling grassroots initiatives.
