Security Forces Repel Gunmen Attack, Rescue Foreigner in Anambra

Anambra State police operatives have successfully rescued a foreign national from a kidnapping attempt by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The incident occurred in Ogbunka, Orumba South Local Government Area, during a tense gunfight between the police and the kidnappers.

In a statement released on Monday, the state’s police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the operation, noting that two police officers were injured during the confrontation but managed to protect the foreigner. Both officers are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care.

“The operatives courageously engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle and successfully rescued the VIP. Unfortunately, two officers were hit by gunfire, but they secured the foreigner and are now receiving treatment,” Ikenga said. He added that a manhunt is underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

This incident follows a recent report of police neutralizing three gunmen in Onitsha during an attempted carjacking on Ibekwe Street. According to witnesses, the suspects unknowingly targeted plainclothes police officers, leading to a swift and fatal response. One suspect managed to escape, and the police are actively pursuing him.

Authorities in Anambra have intensified their operations across the state in response to increasing security challenges, particularly from IPOB militants.
