Scavenger Killed, Three Injured in Lagos Explosion Linked to Military Grenade
A deadly explosion occurred in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, after a scavenger tampered with military-grade grenades found among scrap materials. The blast killed the man instantly and left three bystanders injured.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Taiwo Street. Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Ikeja were dispatched to the scene following a distress call reporting a suspected bomb explosion.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was accidental and triggered when the scavenger attempted to dismantle one of the grenades. Emergency responders quickly transported the injured to a nearby hospital, while the deceased’s body was taken to a public morgue for autopsy.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that investigations are ongoing to determine how the explosives made their way into civilian possession. He also urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious objects or activity to the authorities.
