Ruto Orders Withdrawal of Salary Increase for Ministers, Lawmakers Amid Public Outrage

In response to widespread public outrage and nationwide protests, President William Ruto has revoked the recent salary increase for his ministers and lawmakers. The directive, delivered through Hussein Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kenya State House, mandates government officials to “live within their means.”

This decision comes in the wake of reports that, effective July 1, Mr. Ruto’s ministers and Kenyan members of parliament had received a pay rise. The pay hike led to intense criticism, particularly as it coincided with nationwide protests that have claimed over 39 lives and resulted in hundreds of injuries.

“The President has emphasized that now more than ever, the Executive and all arms of government must live within their means,” stated Mr. Mohammed. He further noted that Mr. Ruto has ordered a review of the salaries for his ministers and lawmakers.

Before the suspension, the pay rise details were as follows:

  • Cabinet secretaries’ salaries increased from Ksh. 957,000 to Ksh. 990,000 plus allowances.
  • Principal secretaries’ salaries rose from Ksh. 792,519 to Ksh. 819,844.
  • Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate saw an increase from Ksh. 1,185,327 to Ksh. 1,208,362.
  • Members of parliament’s salaries went up from Ksh. 725,502 to Ksh. 739,600.

The decision to revoke the salary increment came amidst deadly protests against a recent tax hike, despite deliberations on the pay raise occurring months prior.

President Ruto has announced that the pay rise for his ministers and lawmakers will be suspended for the time being.
