Rivers State Crisis: Former LG Chairmen Threaten Showdown with Gov. Fubara Over Supreme Court Ruling

Former local government chairmen in Rivers State are escalating tensions with Governor Siminalayi Fubara following a Supreme Court ruling that bans the use of caretaker committees for local government administration. The ex-chairmen, who align with Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, voiced their frustrations during a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Dr. Chidi Lloyd, former chairman of Emohua LGA, accused Governor Fubara of defying the court’s directive by continuing to use caretaker committees in the state’s 23 local government councils. Lloyd warned that further non-compliance could lead to significant unrest and urged national police authorities to intervene.

Lloyd emphasized the seriousness of their threat, stating, “We are prepared to return to our councils and take action if the governor persists in his disregard for the court ruling.” He also criticized the police for their perceived inaction and called for immediate enforcement measures.

Hope Ikriko, former chairman of Ahoada West LGA, echoed Lloyd’s concerns, describing the governor’s actions as undermining peace and order. Ikriko criticized the governor for alleged property seizures targeting political opponents and warned that the former chairmen would respond similarly if necessary.

Allwell Ihunda, ex-chairman of Port Harcourt City and former ALGON chairman, highlighted the Supreme Court’s rulings of July 4 and July 11, which reinforced local government autonomy and invalidated caretaker committees. Ihunda accused the Rivers State government of actively promoting these illegal committees, in contrast to other states adhering to the Supreme Court’s mandate.

The situation remains tense as the Rivers Police Command has taken control of the 23 LGA headquarters. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stated that police presence will continue until a competent court rules on the matter.
