Rivers Crisis: Gov Fubara, Minister Wike Meet in Aso Rock

The embattled Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and his estranged political mentor, Nyesom Wike, the incumbent Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), met in the hallowed halls of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The unexpected encounter occurred as both figures converged for the National Police Council meeting under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

The meeting, which was attended by several state governors, is shrouded in speculation about whether it could provide an opportunity to mend the rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.

Among the notable state governors seen heading to this closed-door event were Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), ABDULLAHI Abba (Kano), and Bassey Ottu (Cross River).

Before entering the meeting, there was a buzz of activity as some of the governors, including Wike, engaged in sidebar discussions while others exchanged pleasantries. Notably, Wike and the National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu were seen in an animated conversation. In a surprising turn of events, Wike later extended his hand and briefly exchanged pleasantries with Governor Fubara after breaking away from the NSA.

This historic encounter marks the first face-to-face meeting between the Rivers State Governor, adorned in a white Kaftan, and his estranged godfather, Wike, also elegantly attired in a white Kaftan since the reported commencement of their feud.

The crisis between Fubara and Wike had previously triggered attempts by 24 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Fubara. The resulting turmoil within the state led to a tumultuous protest by the governor’s loyalists at the assembly complex, further intensifying the already heated political climate.
