“Reverse Irregular Admissions Immediately,” JAMB Tells UNN, Other Institutions
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has instructed the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and other affected tertiary institutions to immediately reverse irregular admissions.
The directive follows reports that some institutions have bypassed higher-ranked candidates in favor of lower-ranked ones, a practice the Board says contravenes established admission guidelines. JAMB issued the statement through its Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, in Abuja on Monday.
According to the Board, admissions must follow a three-tier system based on Merit, Catchment Area, and Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS), with candidates selected strictly according to ranking. Any deviation, it warned, will not be tolerated.
“Higher-ranked candidates must be admitted first, followed by others in descending order,” the statement said. “Where better-ranked candidates were skipped, the Board has directed the reversal of such admissions and reiterates the need for institutions to strictly adhere to admission guidelines.”
JAMB also addressed a recent allegation by a candidate claiming she was bypassed by UNN despite her high score. The Board clarified that her non-admission was due to her ranking not meeting the selection cutoff and was unrelated to any irregularity.
The Board urged candidates to avoid spreading unverified claims on social media and to confirm any alleged irregularities through official channels.
JAMB reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in the admission process, emphasizing that no higher-ranked candidate will be displaced by a lower-ranked one.
