Researchers Discover How Painful Fibroids Grow

In a groundbreaking study, researchers at the University of Cincinnati have unraveled the distinct signaling pathways employed by fibroid cells, distinguishing them from uterine cells. This discovery is crucial for pinpointing therapeutic targets that selectively address the tumors while sparing the surrounding tissue, according to Stacey Schutte, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the institution’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The findings, published in the journal F&S Science, shed light on the invasive and costly nature of fibroid treatments, which currently impose significant financial burdens, costing patients and insurers billions of dollars annually, as reported by the National Institutes of Health.

To emulate the conditions fibroids face in the uterus, researchers cultivated fibroid and uterine cells on plates with an elastic bottom. Utilizing a flexible tension device, the cells were subjected to mechanical strain. Notably, fibroid cells displayed heightened sensitivity to this strain, highlighting disparities in the way cells held their shape.

Lead author Rachel Warwar, from UC’s College of Medicine, emphasized the significance of integrating mechanical strain alongside hormonal considerations in studying fibroid cells. “The more we are able to mimic the environment of these cells in the uterus, the more we will understand the pathology of these cells and can then work to target anomalous pathways in fibroid cells,” she stated.

With nearly 4 in 5 women experiencing fibroids during their lifetimes, these findings underscore the urgency of exploring alternative, nonhormonal treatments. Andreja Moset Zupan, a research associate in Schutte’s biomedical engineering lab and study coauthor, expressed the need for nonhormonal options to preserve fertility in women seeking to conceive.

As researchers delve deeper into the cellular pathology, the next frontier involves utilizing 3D simulations and modeling to gain a comprehensive understanding of fibroid development. This approach promises to pave the way for more effective and targeted treatments for this prevalent health concern.
