Reps Monthly Salary is N600,000, Not N900,000, Clarifies House Spokesperson

The monthly salary for members of the House of Representatives is N600,000, not the speculated N900,000, according to a statement from Rep. Akin Rotimi, the House Spokesperson. This clarification was issued on Wednesday in response to widespread media reports suggesting discrepancies in the salaries of the representatives.

Rep. Rotimi emphasized the House’s commitment to a 50 percent salary reduction to alleviate economic hardship. “The House of Representatives has been inundated by media reports claiming that our monthly salary is N936,979. We wish to clarify that the actual salary, after deductions for advances like housing, is N600,000,” he stated.

Rotimi explained that the higher salary figure presented by a member on television was an exceptional case due to the member assuming office late through a court decision. This case does not reflect the typical salary structure.

The House passed a resolution on July 18 mandating a 50 percent salary cut for six months. However, this was not implemented in July due to procedural delays. “The bureaucracy was formally instructed on July 23, following the adoption of votes and proceedings from the plenary,” Rotimi said.

Despite these delays, instructions for adjusting salaries have been issued and will be enforced to ensure the House’s pledge is honored. “There is nothing to investigate, as the House’s position on this matter has been communicated to journalists who sought clarification,” Rotimi asserted.

He called for public patience and reiterated the House’s dedication to transparency and earning the trust of Nigerians.
