Reps Accuse Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye of Spending N45 Million on New Year Party, N20 Million on Sanitary Pads
The Ministry of Women Affairs, led by Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, is under scrutiny by the House of Representatives for alleged financial irregularities. The ministry reportedly spent N45 million on a New Year’s party and N20 million on sanitary pads, with an additional N1.5 million on vehicle fuel.
Kafilat Ogbara, Chair of the House Committee on Women Affairs, spearheaded the inquiry, emphasizing that the goal was to uncover the truth rather than target the minister or her officials. The investigation was prompted by allegations of non-payment to contractors, despite the release of funds.
During the hearing, the committee sought explanations for the N1.5 billion intended for contractor payments, as well as funds appropriated for the African First Lady’s mission. Contractors alleged fund diversion, which was confirmed by the ministry’s procurement officer. The director of finance and administration stated that only approved contracts had been paid.
Minister Kennedy-Ohaneye denied any misappropriation or overspending. However, the committee ordered a halt to all 2024 contract processes by the ministry until the issue of the missing funds is resolved.
