Reporter’s Stray Bullet Claim Disputed: Kano Government Sets Record Straight
The Kano State government has refuted recent reports suggesting that a reporter from the State-owned TV station, Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV), Naziru Idris Ya’u, was struck by a stray bullet at the Government House on Friday evening.
Earlier claims by Naziru, the ARTV correspondent stationed at the Government House, indicated that he was hit by a mysterious bullet while conversing with friends near the Government House gate. Allegedly, the bullet lodged in his arm, prompting him to seek medical attention at the Government House Clinic.
However, in a statement released on Saturday, spokesperson for the Kano State governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, categorically denied Naziru’s assertion. Dawakin Tofa clarified that the reporter sustained injuries from flying metal debris originating from a construction site within the Government House premises, rather than being hit by a stray bullet.
“The incident, which generated significant misinformation, led to widespread concern and speculation regarding the safety of journalists covering events at the Government House,” the statement read.
Dawakin Tofa emphasized that journalists are not under threat within the Kano Government House premises. He urged reporters to ensure credible sourcing in their reporting and avoid sensational angles that could mislead the public.
Naziru Idris Ya’u expressed gratitude for the medical attention he received and thanked well-wishers for their support during his recovery.
The government reiterated the importance of journalists remaining vigilant, especially in environments where construction activities may pose potential hazards. It dispelled rumors that had sparked outrage and called for increased safety measures for journalists covering sensitive events.
