Report: How Tinubu Administration Spent N14 Billion on Renovations, Honorariums, and Forex Amid Worsening Economic Hardship
The administration of President Bola Tinubu has come under intense public scrutiny following the revelation of N14 billion in expenditures between May and July 2024. This spending, which includes significant outlays for the renovation of Presidential quarters, honorariums, foreign exchange purchases, and various Presidential trips, has raised questions about the government’s fiscal priorities at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with severe economic hardship.
A review of public payment records reveals a series of high-cost expenditures by the Presidency that have sparked widespread concern. On July 19, 2024, the Presidency disbursed N150 million specifically to cover expenses related to Presidential trips. This payment is part of a broader pattern of spending on travel and associated costs during this period.
Perhaps most notable is the July 17 expenditure, where N1.6 billion was allocated for the purchase of foreign exchange. This substantial sum, spent in a single day, has drawn particular attention given the ongoing economic challenges facing Nigeria, including a shortage of foreign currency reserves and inflationary pressures.
Further scrutiny reveals that on July 15, 2024, the administration spent N61.1 million on honorariums. Additionally, on July 13, N38.9 million was used to purchase foreign exchange, while the same day saw a further N90.4 million spent on honorariums. Another N350 million was allocated for Presidential trips, underscoring the significant financial resources being directed toward travel and associated activities.
The review also uncovered substantial investments in the renovation and refurbishment of Presidential quarters. On May 31, 2024, the government spent N1.354 billion on the renovation, acquisition, and rehabilitation of forfeited quarters at the State House in Guzape. The same day, N773 million was allocated for similar work at the State House in Mabushi. This was followed by an additional N1.877 billion spent on the renovation of the President’s quarters.
Moreover, on the same day, N3.5 billion was allocated for the construction of an office complex within the State House, while N2.827 billion was used for the renovation of the Vice President’s official quarters.
Other significant expenditures include N350 million on May 29 for Presidential trips and related expenses, alongside N400 million for honorariums. Earlier in May, on the 17th, the Presidency spent N177.2 million on honorariums, N169 million on the purchase of foreign exchange, and N271.5 million on Presidential trips.
These expenditures have triggered a wave of criticism, with many Nigerians questioning the administration’s spending priorities, particularly at a time when the country is facing significant economic challenges. The Tinubu administration has previously expressed a commitment to fiscal prudence and the careful management of scarce resources. However, the scale and nature of these recent expenditures have led to concerns that the government’s actions do not align with its stated goals.
The public backlash is further fueled by the broader context of economic hardship, where many Nigerians are struggling with rising living costs, unemployment, and limited access to basic necessities. As the country continues to navigate these challenges, the revelations of such significant spending on non-essential items have only intensified the debate about the government’s priorities and its commitment to addressing the needs of its citizens.
With the spotlight now on these expenditures, there is growing pressure on the Tinubu administration to justify these financial decisions and to provide greater transparency regarding how public funds are being allocated. As Nigeria faces mounting economic pressures, the scrutiny surrounding these expenditures is likely to continue, with many calling for a reassessment of the government’s fiscal strategies to better align with the country’s urgent needs.
